Touring & Deciding

What to ask when touring an assisted living home.

A tour is where the brochure meets reality. Most communities are good at first impressions — a clean lobby, a friendly greeting, fresh cookies on the way in. The questions below are designed to get past that and find out what daily life is actually like, at any home you visit, including ours.

Staffing and ratios

  • How many residents is each caregiver responsible for, on a typical day shift and a typical night shift?
  • Is a caregiver on site 24 hours a day, including overnight, or is overnight coverage on-call?
  • How much staff turnover has there been in the past year?

Ratios matter more than almost anything else on this list. A community can have beautiful common areas and still leave residents waiting a long time for help if the staffing ratio is stretched thin.

Medication and medical care

  • Who administers medication, and how is it tracked?
  • What happens in a medical emergency — who's trained to respond, and how quickly are families notified?
  • How does the community communicate with a resident's outside doctors or specialists?

Cost and what's actually included

  • Is the quoted rate all-inclusive, or are there separate "level of care" fees added on top?
  • What happens to the price if my family member's care needs increase later?
  • Are there fees for things like laundry, activities, or transportation that aren't obvious upfront?

We wrote a full breakdown of this in What Assisted Living Actually Costs in Menifee, CA — the honest answer to the first question above changes the real monthly cost more than almost anything else.

Daily life and routine

  • Can you describe an average Tuesday, hour by hour?
  • What are meals actually like — home-cooked, or catered from a central kitchen?
  • Is there a fixed visiting-hours policy, or can family visit any time?

The honest, slightly uncomfortable questions

  • What does a hard day look like here — for a resident, and for a caregiver?
  • Can you connect me with a current resident's family for a reference?
  • What would make this not the right fit for my family member?

That last question is worth asking directly. A community that gives you a thoughtful, specific answer — rather than insisting they're right for everyone — is usually being straight with you.

What to notice, beyond the questions

Watch how staff talk to residents when they don't know you're paying attention. Notice whether residents look engaged or just present. Ask if you can come back unannounced for a second visit — a community confident in what a normal day looks like will usually say yes without hesitation.

At Penda Homes, we'd rather you judge us by walking through one of our homes and asking every question on this list than by reading a brochure. Tours are unhurried, by appointment, and we're glad to answer the uncomfortable questions too.
